World Expression Forum 2024: Programming Announced

Lillehammer is gearing up to host the World Expression Forum 2024, a global assembly of freedom of expression. Scheduled from May 27-28, the event aims to illuminate and bolster freedom of speech and democracy. Additionally, the WEXFO Youth Network Conference will be held on May 29th, focusing on encouraging youth participation in the development of democracy.

Programming has been announced, with the forum boasting a diverse lineup of speakers and artists from five continents. Notable contributors include Irene Khan, Laurie Halse Anderson, and Noam Shuster Eliassi, among others.

Kristenn Einarsson, Managing Director of WEXFO, emphasized the importance of the conference, stating: "Freedom of expression is under threat from various quarters, and conflict levels are rising in many places around the world, including Europe. War, conflict, the rise of artificial intelligence, and increased polarization and disinformation contribute to a more challenging climate for debate. Access to free information and literature is restricted for many. The world is facing a crisis of trust between people, authorities, and the media. Freedom of expression is the key to regaining trust and strengthening the development of democracy."

The IPA will also be present at the forum, with IPA President Karine Pansa presenting the Short List for the 2024 IPA Prix Voltaire at the Gala Dinner and IPA participating in a workshop building on the international book sector statementon the freedom to read, freedom to publish and freedom of expression.
