Cypress Street Improvement Project Transforming Abilene's City Core

The heart of Abilene is poised for transformation as the City of Abilene gears up for the Cypress Street Improvement Project. This ambitious endeavor, spanning from North 1st Street to North 5th Street, will see comprehensive roadway and sidewalk reconstruction, breathing new life into the historic thoroughfare.

On Thursday, the Abilene City Council approved a guaranteed maximum price (GMP) of $9,548,653 for the project with Teinert Construction.

City Council's approval of the GMP for the Cypress Street Improvement Project allows the City to provide Teinert with a Notice to Proceed, allowing construction to begin within 5 days of receiving the Notice. Road closures in the affected areas are expected to begin within the next week.

Planned street closures, alleyway access, and sidewalk access for the first phase of the Cypress Street Improvement Project extending through September 2024 will include:

  • Cypress Street will be closed just north of the North 3rd Street intersection through south of the North 5th intersection
  • North 4th Street will be closed on the west side of Cedar Street and halfway between Pine & Cypress streets
  • Cypress and North 4th sidewalks will remain open for public use
  • The alley between Cedar and Cypress will remain open for city use, utilities, and deliveries
  • The alley between Cypress and Pine will remain open to access the parking lot between North 3rd and North 4th and to access North 5th

Work on Cypress Street will pause for the months of October, November, and December 2024 to minimize the disruption to local businesses during the holiday months. Phase 2 of the Cypress Street Improvement Project will begin in January 2025. The total construction time for the Cypress Street Improvement Project is 18 months.
