Attorney General John Formella to Receive the "Governor Meldrim Thomson Jr. Principle Above Politics Award" at Annual Amos Tuck Dinner

NHGOP Chairman Chris Ager released the following statement announcing that Attorney General John Formella will be the recipient of this year's Governor Meldrim Thomson Jr. Principle Above Politics Chairman's Award.

"I am delighted to announce Attorney General John Formella as the recipient of the Governor Meldrim Thomson Principles over Politics Award.

"Attorney General Formella's tenure has been marked by his rigorous defense of our state's rights and foundational principles, effectively blocking federal overreach through his challenges to vaccine mandates and burdensome environmental regulations.

"His proactive measures to enhance public safety and integrity-from expanding the Cold Case Unit, to initiating significant actions against major social media platforms for harming youth mental health-stand as a testament to his commitment to upholding the rule of law and serving the people of New Hampshire with distinction.

"These achievements truly reflect the ethos of Governor Thomson's legacy of putting principles over politics."

"The Governor Meldrim Thomson Jr. Principle Above Politics Chairman's Award" is presented each year to an individual who has demonstrated courageous and principled leadership. Nominations may be made by any New Hampshire Republican. The recipient is chosen by the State Chairman in close consultation with the children living in New Hampshire of Governor and Mrs. Meldrim Thomson Jr.

Attorney General John Formella was sworn into office on April 22, 2021. He has served as Vice President of the National Association of Attorneys General and is a member of the Republican Attorneys General Association.

AG Formella oversees all New Hampshire homicide cases, including the recent successful prosecution in the Harmony Montgomery murder case. He has expanded the State's Cold Case Unit, leading to resolutions in long standing cases, and his drug enforcement team has secured significant prison sentences for fentanyl traffickers.

He has also worked with Governor Sununu, the Department of Safety, and the Legislature to establish the Northern Border Alliance Task Force, enhancing security along the Canadian border; initiated investigations into social media companies for harm to youth mental health, including filing a major lawsuit against Facebook; secured new resources for victim services and to combat human trafficking; and expanded units within the Attorney General's Office focused on election law, public integrity, civil rights, and elder abuse.

In 2021, AG Formella filed successful lawsuits to block the OSHA and Federal Contractor vaccine mandates.

He has sued the federal government over multiple issues ranging from immigration and ESG, to Second Amendment rights, and filed successful challenges to block overly burdensome federal environmental regulations and the ARPA Tax Mandate.

His Office has also successfully defended against legal challenges to the State's Education Freedom Accounts program and new election integrity laws, and he has negotiated several major legal settlements, including a $40.5 million agreement with Johnson & Johnson for the State's opioid claims against the Company.

AG Formella previously served as Governor Sununu's Legal Counsel, advising the Governor on all significant legal issues affecting the State. He is a Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude graduate of Florida State University and graduated with honors from George Washington University Law School.
