Students, parents and teachers welcomed for a free half-day of science discovery

WHAT: Hawaiian Electric, Kamehameha Schools, and the Hawaii Space Grant Consortium invite students, parents and teachers to celebrate the 21st annual Astronaut Lacy Veach Day of Discovery, a free science event with more than 21 workshops highlighting space exploration, Polynesian voyaging, robotics coding and hands-on educational activities designed for students in grades 3-12. DETAILS: Featured keynote speaker will be Nainoa Thompson of the Polynesian Voyaging Society. Workshop topics include learning about energy, voyaging, robotics, coding, polymers, earthquakes, volcanoes, circuits, air pressure, science and magic, nano science, and the Fibonacci sequence in nature. The closing assembly will feature a STEM magic show and STEM demonstrations.
ABOUT: The Astronaut Lacy Veach Day of Discovery honors the life and legacy of the late Charles Lacy Veach, who grew up in Honolulu with an interest in science, had a distinguished career as a fighter pilot in the United States Air Force, and went on to fly two Space Shuttle missions. Created by Art and Rene Kimura, educators and Living Treasures of Hawaii, and organized by the Hawaii Space Grant Consortium, the free event is made possible through a grant from Hawaiian Electric which has sponsored the Astronaut Lacy Veach Day of Discovery since its inception. Additional support includes Kamehameha Schools Kapalama.
