Destruction of Political Signs is Illegal

Reminder - Destruction of Political Signs is Illegal

(Superior, WI) Douglas County Clerk Susan Sandvick reminds the public that destruction of political candidate signs is illegal. Per Wisconsin statute, no person may deface, destroy or remove any legally placed election campaign sign, or alter the information printed thereon. Doing so can result in a fine of $100 per sign. In addition, political signs that are placed on public property or within a highway right-of-way may be removed by local authorities.

The Partisan Primary is August 9th, and the General Election is November 8th, and there have been reports of destruction and removal of signs. Sandvick added, "Political signs are personal property. It's simply not right to destroy political signs for whatever reason."

Reports of persons conducting such sign destruction can be directed to law enforcement or her office. The public can contact Sandvick at 715-395-1568 with any questions on the statute.

"Douglas County embraces an environment of a positive campaign season and voting experience, with as little disruption as possible," said Sandvick. She asks that the public simply respect all components of the electoral process.
