Major Traffic Shift on I-64 East at Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel

HAMPTON - Motorists traveling on I-64 East (towards Norfolk) should expect a new traffic pattern at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel to begin as early as Wednesday, May 1, 2024. Both eastbound lanes will be permanently diverted to the right at Hampton shoreline and onto the newly constructed eastbound trestle, also known as North Trestle.

Following last week's historic boring machine breakout at the HRBT North Island, the upcoming shift is the next crucial milestone toward increasing safety, easing congestion and improving emergency evacuation readiness in Hampton Roads. This shift will allow crews to begin demolishing the existing I-64 East marine (North) trestle. Westbound traffic will not be impacted.

It is important that all drivers are patient, obey posted speed limits and drive distraction-free. Please pay attention to the digital message signs for important roadway messages.
